Frequently asked questions

“I have nothing to hide. Why should I care about my privacy?”

You Have Everything to Hide

"Don’t confuse privacy with secrecy. I know what you do in the bathroom, but you still close the door. That’s because you want privacy, not secrecy." -Fábio Esteves

Do you know that saying "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas"? Well in the same sense what happens online STAYS online, even if you delete it. Think of it this way, imagine you are working at Fabe Cook's Apple Farm. Then you tell your boss, Fabe Cook, that you hate apples, but you quickly realize your mistake and tell them to forget about it. Fabe Cook might tell you that your secret is safe with them, but Fabe Cook still remembers that you said that. Fabe Cook might even go and tell Gogole's Apple Farm not to hire you because you prefer the contrary.

What might happen if a company goes behind your back or gets hacked, such as the Sony hack of 2014. All of that data becomes available to everyone, and your data becomes public information.

Privacy is a Human Right

Just like freedom, we do not always have the right to privacy. There are billions of people who live in a world where privacy does not exist.

Article 12 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “No one must be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honor and reputation.”

In many dictatorships and countries like China and Russia, the government watches your every move. They see what pages you visit, who you messaged on Facebook, and even your emails, so many people are not aware the type of the digital footprint they leave when they search the internet.

Wrong Hands

You might trust large organizations with your data because you might think they have extensive safety measures, but it's only as secure as its weakest link. What if a major company gets hacked? Are you okay with that? Sure they may pay millions in legal reparations, but that's nothing compared to the multi-billion dollar companies.

Future

You may not be aware, but as computers get better and better at processing our data everyday, we are sharing our information to anyone who wants it. Imagine you're the head of a company and you're company gets torn apart because of a search you made 10-15 years ago. Technology always changes in a path we would least expect.

What is DNS Wall?

We host and minimal logging DNS servers with support for DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH). Our servers eliminate ads, malware, trackers, and viruses before they ever reach you.

Many of us use some form of ad-blocker, most likely in a web browser. However, that means it can only block ads/trackers on the web browser that you are using. What about operating system based trackers? Ads baked into phone apps? Smart TV or smart home devices? This is where DNS Wall steps in. By configuring your router to use DNS Wall you eliminate ads, malware, trackers, and viruses at the DNS level through our free to use service.

Who is behind all this?

My name is Rohan and currently, I am a one-man squad. I am aiming for DNS Wall to be a mainstream service that anyone can use to stop trackers no matter where they are. If you’re looking to join me on my mission contact me via the methods above. Thank you!

Which blocklists are used

We use the following blocklists to eliminate trackers, advertisements, malware, and phishing sites.

Who wants my data?

Practically everyone wants your data. When you visit a website almost every business that ensures your connection, including the one you are visiting, steals your personal data, and knows that you are visiting them.

By blocking those trackers at a DNS level, you eliminate the opportunity for them to track your DNS requests online. This data is especially useful for your internet service provider, as they turn your interests into valuable data for advertisers.

Are there any other ways I can protect my privacy?

We would highly encourage installing the Privacy Badger Chrome extension. It is a browser add-on that stops third-party trackers from tracking you across the internet. DNS Wall ensures that trackers even from your operating system don't slip by.

A website I need isn't working, what should I do?

Check our feedback form. After submission, we will review the domain and determine whether it is safe to unblock or if the domain is potentially unwanted content, in which it will remain blacklisted. Your request will be reviewed within 24 hours and will be updated on all of our DNS servers.

Where can I learn about DNS?

Check our DNS Tab.

Can I sponsor a new server?

Of course! Contact our support to get started.

Who is your hosting provider?

We currently use Vultr VPS SSD hosting, so our servers are SSD in the cloud. Vultr uses 100% KVM hosting, meaning that our instances don't share resources with other clients, therefore your connection is always wicked fast.

Does DNS Wall have a VPN?

We currently do not have a VPN, but we are looking to expand into that region sometime soon. We plan to host our servers in the same locations as our VPN to have rapid fast response times.

Is it legal to use a VPN?

Yes, VPNs are an amazing way of protecting data and privacy on public and insecure networks. We highly recommend you check out this video.

How can I test my ping?

We would recommend looking at the Vultr Looking Glass. Our servers use Vultr VPS SSD Hosting to establish an extremely fast connection.

Is DNS Wall open source? Where can I access the code?

Unfortunately, like many DNS providers, we are not open source to maintain reliability. We plan to move everything open source in the future. Stay tuned! :)

What Linux distribution and version is used?

All Servers use Ubuntu Server 20.04.

How is this funded? How much does it cost?

All servers are free for everyone! Each server costs anywhere from $5-$10/month to operate.

We are funded by YOUR support. :)

Do you have international servers yet?

Unfortunately not, we are a growing service and we are trying to roll out new servers ASAP.

How many queries per second can be handled?

We prefer to keep that information private as doing so can sacrifice security and reliability. Just know that we are constantly adjusting our servers to meet the needs of our users.

Can I host my instance?

Sure, contact our support!

How often are your blacklist updated?

We update our servers every 6-12 hours. We want to keep everything up to date to ensure you do not get tracked.

Where are the servers located?

Check out the servers page!

When can I expect a reply from the support team?

Our support team is based solely in the United States, so you can expect a reply from 8 AM-11 PM CST.

Can I leave some feedback?

Are you accepting staff?

Yes, we are! Please contact us via any of the contacts on this page!
